Valentines Day Update

This week Ryan Miller is back in town to finish teaching the show! We'll be rehearsing the weapon line at KHS tonight, Monday night, right after school.  Ryan lands at 4pm so we'll begin working technique with Ms. Hench and then Ryan will jump right in when he arrives.

Tuesday and Thursday we'll rehearse the whole ensemble and we were able to schedule a gym at KHS both nights!  We'll be rehearsing in a gym every rehearsal from now until State, alternating campuses by week.  (No more shuffling the cafeteria tables at Shoe!)

Our next contest is less than two weeks away in Bryan.  We perform at 9:37AM and it's a good two-hours by bus so our departure time from the schools will be around 5:30AM.  We'll send out a detailed itinerary the first of next week.

Looking forward to a great week of rehearsals.  We'll have completed the show by Friday and we'll perform most of it next week.  Work hard guard!

First Show in the books!

Congratulations to the guard on placing FIRST in class at the Vista Ridge show last weekend!  The show generated a lot of enthusiasm from the judges and the audience and we're excited to take it to the next level.  It was also many of our members first ever winter guard performance and all should be proud of our accomplishments so far.  Also great to see so many parents and family at our first contest.  We certainly hope to see you all again at every show.  Our next contest is at Bryan HS on February 26.  (We perform in the morning so it's going to be a very early departure from Killeen. Details to come.)

**If you missed the show, or would like to watch it again; Mr. Myers has posted it on YouTube.  Search for Killeen Shoemaker Guard and it should come up.  Or, search for Mr. Myers channel named: tbplayer63.**

We followed up a strong first performance with a solid week of rehearsal. (getting into a gym helps a lot!) We now have pretty much everything we learned with Ryan three weeks ago out on the floor with work and drill and, while it still needs plenty of polish, it's all readable and huge progress from just one week ago. Keep up the hard work!  We'd also like to thank all our parents, friends and anyone providing rides to our students to and from rehearsals.  We know it's a bit of a hassle getting your students all the way across town for rehearsals and we appreciate your time and patience.  Starting February 22nd, we'll be able to get into a gym every night and we'll begin alternating rehearsal sites by weeks. (One week and KHS, the next at SHS and back and forth until State.) This should help even out the travel time put in by all the students.

As of now, Ryan Miller plans to return the week of Feb. 14 to finish teaching the transitions, teach the new ending and beef up the work in portions that we're already handling well.  He will do this during school and at our regular Tuesday and Thursday evening rehearsals so there won't be any added weekend commitments. (We may add one weeknight for the weapons to re-learn Power of Love.  Stay tuned for an update on that.)  Keep in mind also that there will be NO REHEARSAL this Thursday, Feb. 10 as the directors will be attending the Texas Music Educator's Association Annual Clinic and Conference in San Antonio this week. Tuesday's rehearsal will still be at Shoemaker HS from 6-9pm.

First Update of the New Season!

I'd like to take a moment to congratulate all the winter guard members on a successful weekend learning the show with our choreographer Ryan Miller.  We were all very pleased with the progress made last weekend and are very excited about the season.  It's a great show with lots of potential and it's sure to be a crowd pleaser to boot! A big THANK YOU goes out to Ryan Miller for his creative expertise and to Chelsey's (sp?) Mom for the amazing spread she brought in for lunch last Saturday.  It was delicious!

Unfortunately, our directors didn't fair so well after the weekend was over.  Mr. Myers came down with the flu Monday night and was out for 2 days (he's back now) meanwhile Ms. Hench was got a shard of broken glass wedged in her hand that would require surgery to remove.  Ms. Hench went under the knife this afternoon and we're happy to report that the surgery was successful, the glass removed and tendon repaired, and she is at home recovering!  We expect to see her back in rehearsal on Tuesday next week.  Best wishes on a speedy recovery!

With all that chaos, things didn't go quite as smoothly as we'd hoped tonight but we'll do better in the future.  We are going to make one change to our Tuesday and Thursday evening rehearsals that will be in effect until Feb. 22 when we can get into a gym for every rehearsal.  The change will be this: at 8:35 we will take a water break and set up our equipment for a complete run of the show which will begin at 8:40.  The show runs just over 4 minutes and parents are welcome to come and watch. (We'll send someone to let you in during the water break).  Once we've performed the show, we'll wrap up the rehearsal and begin folding the tarp and resetting the tables and chairs in the cafeteria.  ALL guard members are expected to assist in folding the floor and resetting the cafeteria and no one is excused until this is done and our equipment is put away in the band room.  When everyone helps, the process only takes about 10-15 minutes and everyone will be out the door by 9pm.  Please continue to have students at the school by 5:40 to help clear the cafeteria and set the floor so rehearsal can begin promptly at 6 each night. This is a small thing that really helps get a lot done!

Next Saturday, January 29th, is our first contest at Vista Ridge HS in Cedar Park.  Right now we are scheduled perform at 1:50pm.  Detailed itineraries and directions will be posted and distributed early next week.  Only 6 school days and 2 ensemble rehearsals until our first show!  Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

It is time for Winter Guard!

I know it have been a little while since I have last posted.  I hope everyone had a super Christmas and are enjoying the New Year!!!

We had a great rehearsal last night.  Mr. Myers and I are excited for Ryan to come next week and to start learning the 2011 Contest Show. - "Back To The Future"

Here are some announcements and reminders:

1.  Our last technique night is January 11th from 6 - 8 pm @ Shoemaker High School.

2.  Ryan will be on January 14th.  The calendar has us practicing on Friday with Ryan.  He was unable to get a flight in for that rehearsal, so we will NOT be practicing on Friday the 14th.  (You have the night off!) We WILL have rehearsal with him on SATURDAY, 1/15 form 9am to 9 pm and SUNDAY 1/16 from 1 pm to 5 pm, in the Killeen High School Gym.  We will also have a show preview performance for all parents, family and friends at 5:30 pm on Sunday (1/16).

3.  We are looking at painting the contest floor on Monday the 17th (NO SCHOOL THAT DAY).  But things haven't been 100% confirmed, so I will keep you updated.

4.  Reminder:  No School on January 17 & 18th.

5.  Our first TCGC Contest is January 29th at Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park.  Our performance time is 1:50 pm.

6.  The end of the semester this the coming week!!!!!  PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR TEACHER.  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT EVERYONE IS ELIGIBLE.  IF YOU ARE FAILING A CLASS ON AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PERFORM AT THE FIRST CONTEST.   WE NEED EVERYONE PASSING!!!!!!
